Why does an air conditioner pull so much current when it starts?

An AC compressor needs more current to begin moving than to continue running. A compressor’s locked rotor current runs roughly three to four times its normal running current for a fraction of a second on every start.

Tampa Electric explains the mechanism directly in its Standard Electrical Service Requirements: “The current required to start a motor is much greater than that required to operate it at full load and rated speed. If not controlled, this starting current may cause severe voltage fluctuations, not only on the wiring of the Customer using the motor, but also on other Customers’ wiring. The more frequently the motor is started, the more objectionable these voltage fluctuations become.”

The same document points readers to the National Electrical Code. Article 430 there carries a table that classifies motors by their locked-rotor, or starting, input requirements.

The lights respond to the momentary voltage dip created during startup. Tampa Electric defines flicker as “The momentary variation of voltage level caused by on/off switching of a load on a circuit.” It defines voltage dip as “A momentary reduction of voltage level.”

How much dimming is too much?

Tampa Electric publishes a 4 percent voltage-dip limit for customer equipment in its territory. Its requirement states: “The Company shall have the right to require disconnection of any item of Customer equipment which causes a voltage dip of 4 percent or more of nominal, or any objectionable voltage flicker, or which causes radio or TV or other high frequency interference.”

Tampa Electric also publishes starting-current ceilings for single-phase, 230-volt air-conditioning equipment.

The table includes this condition: “Note 1: Table based on units being sized and maintained so that there will be a maximum of four starts per hour.”

The listed ceiling is coincident starting current. It covers the compressor, condenser fan motor, and air handler blower motor together. It isn’t a compressor-only limit.

Tampa Electric’s footnote says: “This is the maximum allowed coincident starting current of any, or all of the systems components (compressor, condenser fan motor, and air handler blower motor). If the System Starting Current exceeds the values shown, the Customer should investigate the installation of equipment recommended by the manufacturer to reduce the starting current and duration to the level for which Tampa Electric distribution system was designed.”

These are Tampa Electric’s published requirements for its territory. Much of Pinellas and Pasco counties is served by Duke Energy Florida. Duke customers should confirm the applicable standard directly with Duke.

When is flickering an emergency instead of an annoyance?

Flickering becomes urgent when other symptoms point beyond momentary compressor startup. Call an emergency electrician when flickering accompanies:

  • Lights brightening in one area while dimming elsewhere
  • A burning smell near the panel or electrical equipment
  • Buzzing or crackling from the electrical panel
  • A panel cover that feels unusually warm
  • Flickering that continues after the AC finishes starting

Do I call an electrician or my AC company?

Call your HVAC contractor first when the problem appears limited to the AC equipment, its disconnect, or its dedicated circuit. Call an electrician when the panel, service, neutral, or other circuits are involved.

Florida law draws a specific boundary. F.S. 489.105(3)(f) includes this work within a Class A air-conditioning contractor’s scope: “to replace, disconnect, or reconnect power wiring on the line or load side of the dedicated existing electrical disconnect switch on single phase electrical systems; to repair or replace power wiring, disconnects, breakers, or fuses for dedicated HVAC circuits with proper use of a circuit breaker lock; to install, disconnect, and reconnect low voltage heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning control wiring”.

The same definition then limits that scope. The work “does not include any work such as liquefied petroleum or natural gas fuel lines within buildings, except for disconnecting or reconnecting changeouts of liquefied petroleum or natural gas appliances within buildings; potable water lines or connections thereto; sanitary sewer lines; swimming pool piping and filters; or electrical power wiring.”

Read together, the named HVAC circuit tasks are narrow allowances. General electrical power wiring remains outside that air-conditioning scope.

Class B air-conditioning contractors carry the same four electrical clauses. This isn’t limited to Class A contractors. Their scope is otherwise limited to 25 tons of cooling and 500,000 Btu of heating in any one system.

The practical dividing line looks like this:

  • The AC unit, existing disconnect, and dedicated HVAC circuit start with HVAC.
  • The panel, service, neutral, and unrelated circuits belong with an electrician.
  • Flickering throughout the house may require both trades to coordinate.

An electrician can perform electrical repair when the problem extends beyond the dedicated HVAC equipment.

What actually fixes lights flickering at AC startup?
